I guess that would rule out the hill country too.
Yup, it would....but I'm not the one who suggested Hill Country

Amazing! Oregon is never a place I'd have considered "temperate"...but it obviously is.... it's just not on the east coast.

Ok, so you're off the hook for that one.

I was thinking that it's neighbor, a hotbed of liberalism and haven for freethinkers, Santa Fe might be a better choice.

Well,

Thanks for all the info so far. I really appreciate all the info. I guess we have a few road trips in our future. We are planning to drive down to stay with some friends in central Florida for a few days in mid February. We then plan to take a week or so to drive up through South and North Carolina and some of VA. My wife has never been in the area so we'll see if these are even in contention for future visits.

Good luck with your search. I guess I should've chimed in earlier, but Josey distracted me. While you're in central Florida, give it a good looking over. It's not all retirement villages and gated communities. I have a ~2700 SF house on two acres nestled between several lakes. I can get to either Florida coast within an hour and a half. It has an out in the country feel to it, but we're only minutes away from the city. Real estate prices are relatively cheap, there is no state income tax, and property taxes are surprisingly low compared to what I was paying in Texas.

Sorry to distract again, but in re-reading the title of this thread, it does say "Looking for a city to retire"....I'm sticking with Alvin, TX on this one... I'm sure you're not the only one who'd like to see Alvin retired.

Good luck and happy hunting, Dave!

If my star sighting sources are correct, Brad and Jen have a spread near Bandon, OR. Maybe it's time to make them a lowball offer.

Since you put it that way, I'm all for it!
