I always thought I would retire in South Carolina. (My grand father retired to Myrtle Beach and lived one block of the sand. WOW!) that was until I made the trip to Tucson, AZ. Absolutely beautiful climate! And if you don't want the bigger city, there are several smaller towns between Tucson and Pheonix that are nice. You won't have the ocean, but you won't have the humidity either. Also, 360 sunny days a year to enjoy the top down! And if your retiring early, lots of job ops to supplement your income.

New York City if you can afford it, northern New Jersey if you can't.

Rob! Are you having a "flash back" to the early 17th century? (Population of 20-50K) or have you been "smokin' something?

Sorry, I forgot about that part. I was just thinking about a great place to retire.

I know you said east coast, but you're confused.

Three places I'd like to land, two on the Oregon coast, either Bandon or Brookings. Third would be the high desert of Oregon, the town of Sisters, a bit north of Bend. Housing costs are reasonable in all three places to my Seattle way of thinking.

Can you discuss estimating housing costs (3 bedroom/2 car garage) when recommending geographical areas?
Thanks.....
In the San Marcos area you are talking about $150K new

Here are his criteria, again (which may rule out New York and Oregon. ):

Climate more temperate than New Hampshire.
Smaller city - maybe 20K to 50K?
Within a hour or so from a major city.
Within a hour or so drive to the ocean.
Reasonable selection of things to do (movies, restaurants, etc.).
Affordable housing (150-200K if even possible?) with some land to build a small garage to play with my cars.
Minimum tax impact.

I guess that would rule out the hill country too.

I'm sure this is what you plan, but the best thing is to narrow down your choices, then visit all of them to get a feel for which one is best for you. The nicest thing is that you have instant friends wherever you go!!
