Every time I see one of these electric car discussions I think of our poor deluded greenies thinking that they are doing something good for the environment. Don't they realize that 70% of our electric power generation is done with fossil fuels? 44.9% is from COAL fired generating stations.

But moving toward non-fossil, renewable electricity generation (e.g., wind power) can fix that. The bugaboo has always been how to develop portable fuel to supplant gas and diesel. Electric cars/trucks do that -- but, of course, there are still lots of challenges with better batteries and so on. Further, the long-term sustainability of all the batteries (or fuel cells, or whatever) hasn't been addressed adequately. All those things have various icky metals in them.
It's kind of like the new low-power (fluorescent) bulbs: if they're adopted universally, what are we going to do with all the dead ones? That's a lot of mercury, all spread around, to deal with. HPH
