Based on the article that you posted, it sounds like the drop in quality is occuring on Japanese cars built in America. I wonder if Japanese cars built in Japan are experiencing the same drop.

I find it remarkable that after all is said and done, the Japanese cars still took 29 of the top 31 places.

I came to the same conclusion. Maybe we should let the Japanese make their cars and we will struggle to compete.

Note: the S2000 is built and assembled in Japan.

Another note: The S2000 is a "sporty" car. I have found this to be true.

"Vehicles that Nissan makes at its new plant in Mississippi..." not to mention the new Mercedes Benz plant in Alabama and other manifestations of the thirdworldization of America [read: German and Japanese capitalists escaping the social gains of their respective working classes just as many American capitalists have been doing for several years now.

Workers of the world unite. --Dr. Karl Heinrich Marx (circa 1860). How very contemporary that sounds.

I would be curious as to how the questions were framed. IMO when you see the JD Powers initial quality survey results and Hyundai and Buick are at the top, it makes me wonder. Sometimes I feel these only measure how the car measures up to that persons expectations. People don't expect much from Buick, so when asked, they respond they are generally pleased with their cars. I don't believe for a second that a Century has less problems than an Accord or Camry.

I wonder how Hondas built in America measure up to Hondas built in Japan and Europe. I'd be willing to bet that there isn't a measurable difference. I think its all in the engineering and design (both of the vehicle and the production facility).

I wonder if the quality control problems that Nissan is having with its cars built in America is unique to Nissan or if it has infected the other Japanese manufacturers building cars here. Again, for the Japanese to take 29 out of 31 places for quality, they must be maintaining a great level of quality control.

One other comment on the JDP survey..................As one reporter remarked, "It might be time to start calling the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study "The Lexus Report." For the fifth straight year, Lexus was the top-ranked nameplate. The study found that Lexus buyers reported 81 problems per 100 vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. The industry average was 118."

I just tossed this out to suggest that if you see a nameplate at the top of both surveys, you can pretty much expect you have a winner.
