I hate being the home IT guy.
over the last 2 months I've had 3 old dell 8300 desktop machines decide they were done.
and do you think I could cobble just one together that works..... noooooo!!!!
and yes after 12 years I know they don't owe me anything but... of course they sort of work just enough to tease you that you could make it better.

I hate it when anything has to be done with our computers as well since I know next to nothing about them and for some reason my much more educated +1 thinks I can fix it. I have in the past upgraded memory, installed printers, set up new computers, etc. but I no longer wish to do that stuff.

I can't think of a use for a 12 year old computer. Windows 98? ME?
You can get working, tested reconditioned desktops for about $200 that will run Windows 10 and with 16G of RAM, 1T hard drive, and a pair of 4-core processors.

Two were running windows 7 and one was Xp.
wife had gone to laptop and have another lap top on order for #1 son.
it's more of the migration and having to extract the data from the old machines.
for single threaded applications the older machines actually had higher clock rates.
we were discussing retiring the Xp machine for security reasons anyways.

Yeah you have old person syndrome. Throw that old crap out.

Recycle them. I just took a Dell notebook to recycling.

I take all my old electronics (that I don't give away) to the county recycling center.

Same here. I guess a lot of folks do. Jim and I went to the recycling center a couple of days ago and noticed HUNDREDS of computers, television sets (even a bunch of flat screens), monitors, printers, etc. were sitting outside the overfilled bins.

I'm so proud of myself I could just spit! I successfully installed our wireless printer so that we can print, fax, etc. from any computer (3) in the house! Woot! I can fax my favorite recipes from my kitchen to whomever I wish. I still hate being the one who has to do this stuff and so wish I could palm it off to someone else. Now I need to figure out how to print junk from my phone.
