Default How old is too old?

How old is too old to drive? Is there an age at which a person should give up his/her license, or is it an individual thing? The question, though discussed here before, comes up again.

What do you think? How old is too old, and how should this be handled?

My uncle just turned in his NY state license. He is 96 years old. He had just received his renewal a few years ago and he told me he didn't have to renew until he was 102. He only drove to the local markets and to the local senior's club, where he likes to dance.

Come to Florida. You won't see hats, all you'll see are knuckles.

We've talked about this before, and I have to agree that age is not the most important determining factor. My dad was driving locally at 90, up until he went in the hospital recently, then to assisted living. He seems much more frail and hesitant to me now and I don't want him driving anymore. I just don't think his reactions will be good enough. He hasn't brought up driving again, which is good.

My mother is 84 and was letting my dad drive her around most of the time. With him no longer available, she's driving all over and doing well at it. So I'm not worried about her right now. Both of them are still really sharp mentally. My dad is just slower to express himself and confuses his words a bit more. That's my big concern with him.

Bottom line - this needs to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Many people are dead by 89. I do not think dead people should be allowed to drive.

Others are in pretty good shape.

Most are probably past the time when they should be driving on public roads.

But I favor some sort of testing, rather than a blanket age rule.

For what it's worth, the FAA does have an age rule for commercial pilots. 62 is mandatory retirement age. Many of them complain about that. No age rule for private pilots -- you just need to be able to pass your annual physical.

Oh yeah, the "old guy with a hat" syndrome is well known.
