How much is for status?
I got to wondering the other day about the super cars that I wouldn't mind owning.Take Ferrari for example, how much of that two, three hundred thousand or more is simply snob or status money? Same for Porsche and the others. Can't be for technology- A 75k Mercedes has all of the tech anyone could imagine and the build quality to go with it. What do you think?

Without question status is a big part of supercar purchases. It is all about bragging rights and the recognition by others. At that level there are not a lot of Jay Leno's out there who buy them for purely for their design and engineering

I have taken the Mercedes route Dave. Given that therefore I'm obviously biased.
Each time you step away from the herd, the pack gets a little smaller and each step gets a little more expensive as well.
Anybody who tells you status isn't part of the decision process, is either lying to you or to themselves.
but how much of those cars do most owners ever exercise?
that's truly the sad part.

Of course it's status and ego. Unless you're a dedicated racer, an ultra rich collector or eccentric what can you do on the street in any of the supercars that you can't do in a Miata or S2000 (aside from show off).
Besides, unless you're so rich that the investment in the car means noting, you'll only become a slave to it, and who needs that?
