How about a controversial thread?

This reminds me of that dope woman who sued McDonalds after spilling hot coffee on herself. As a result, the rest of us have to drink lukewarm coffee because she is a dumbass and didn't take responsibility for her own actions.

I think it was Newton Minnow who, years ago, described TV as a vast wasteland. The more channels we get, the more vast the wasteland becomes.
I really miss David Attenborough.

Unfortunately, you make some good points too. That is the problem. It's real difficult to know what is right or wrong in this case.
Yes I agree, the McDonalds coffee incident was out of line, but that is a different issue.

Oh come on guys, this is complete . People are responsible for their own behavior. If influencing kids is what you're worried about a) teach your kids about nutrition and b) keep them away from the tube. I want to live in a free country. I don't want the government telling me what I can and can't eat. I try to eat responsibly but there are times I want to knock down 18 wings. If we had it your way I'd not be able to find them at any restaurants because the food police would be "protecting me" from myself. When it comes down to either giving me a free choice or telling me what to do I'll take free choice anytime. Isn't that what this country is all about? As an added comment, I am sooooooooo sick of hearing people blame everyone else for their woes.
My kids were taught about nutrition and their exposure to television was limited. But in spite of my best efforts, my kids were still subjected to advertising and able to load up on junk food by buying it in the school cafeteria and from the numerous vending machines strategically placed in the school hallways.

Wow, there are quite a few items to comment on:
1. Things targeted at children: Okay, you cannot hold children responsible for things their parents should controlling. Parents cannot hold society responsible for their children's action. THEY are their parents, not society. BE A PARENT, NOT A FRIEND!
2. Adults and things targeted at them: Adults are ALWAYS responsible for their actionS; albeit, food, smoking, adultery, etc. We DO still have free will. I also was a smoker for 20 years. No one's fault but my own. Quit for 4 years now. Best thing I ever did.
3. Sick of people suing over a hangnail...(we are in the med prof. and malpractice rates are ski-high and health insurance rates are up there because of this. Doctors cannot treat like they want to because of this, etc., etc., etc.
4. LEVITRA commercials.... Hey, I mean really, this women is all but having phone sex on TV. It is embarrassing, I may be sitting their with my father or son...what do you do??
And, I promised to watch football with my hubby tonight.... Eeewww. But I promised and will smile and watch those buffoons run into each other for huge sums of money!!

I think this goes a bit beyond "free will" and into the area of manipulation.

How about "subliminal advertising"? How about companies who put additives in their products to make them addictive. (I don't just mean tobacco!) How about companies who make innaccurate claims about their products right on the label?
I don't want a "fast food police" either, but I'd like to know what's in what I'm eating so that I can make a good choice. There's a difference between telling us what to eat vs telling us what we're eating.
*slight aside... not an innaccurate label, but a really silly one. I was in the grocery store yesterday and saw a big "0 Carbs" label on a pound of bacon!!

Those ads are lots more offensive than a millisecond of Janet Jackson's nipple! Maybe she should have bought ad space?
