Default Highest gas prices ever!

Today's news is that gas prices are the highest they have ever been for this time of year. Now I am hearing predictions of $5/gallon gas this summer. Do you think this will happen? Will it change how you live?

Unfortunately the Iran situation will not help. I'm wondering why we don't invest in more refueling stations for natural gas. I checked at a NG conversion place last week, but they only do it for new vehicles.

Hello Jim. You raise a great question that could be asked of any of the alternatives. In defense of industry, I think that businesses are not sure which way the public is going to go. Natural gas, diesel, batteries, as yet unavailable fuel cells, some gasoline engine......who knows which approach will catch on with consumers long term? So do you invest big and hope the consumer follows, or do you sit and wait for something to catch on before you jump on a band wagon? No one wants to own the next string of Blockbuster stores.

In my opinion, hybrids are delaying the progression to a new platform. I think hybrids are at best a bridge towards the next platform, whatever it may be. At worst, they could be the new platform that results in vehicles that weigh more and cost more to build. If hybrids enjoy long term success, then we will not bother to move on to the best replacement for gasoline.

Yeah ...I think it will get to $5 [at least for 92~93 octane] and maybe even for the lower grades. Got an interesting article a few weeks ago from an internet news digest I subscribe too. I think it's a reliable story but haven't been able to confirm it [and I'll admit I didn't look too hard]. Anyway guess what the USA's largest export product currently is: Oil products, including gasoline. Refiners et al make more money shipping the stuff overseas than can selling it here.

I think it will exceed 4 bucks, but don't forget it's an election year. At 5 bucks too many politicians would be in fear of not getting re-elected. The President included.

My guess is $4.50. As for alternatives, I just don't see them catching on any time soon. Most add way to much initial cost to the car and/or replacement costs when tired. Projections I have seen show gasoline engines still as high as 90% as far out as 2025. People may downsize, etc. but without huge incentives there's no real driving force to change even if the price keeps climbing.
