about 6 or 7 years ago we gave the kids small swiss army knives.
the little kind with a finger nail file a tiny pair of scissors and a little 1 inch blade.
The whole thing was probably 2 1/2 inches long.
strict instruction went along with them that they never bring them to school.
yeah right, dad.

after about a month we get the note from the 4th grade teacher, that we can retrieve the knife during parent teacher conference.

seems #2 son was sitting in class using the tip of the blade as a reading pointer.
at least the teacher maintained a sense of reason.

I chuckle to think that I always had a 5" buck knife in my pocket and usually 2 or 3 case cutters since I worked in a grocery store.
I even can recall using the buck knife in front of faculty working backstage to cut wiring.

We'd all laugh about this, if it wasn't true.

We have gone backwards in the last 50 years.

Simple. Overreaction to some terrible but isolated events that we never would have heard about 50 years ago, long before the advent of 24 hour news and the career advocate.

Both serve useful purposes. 24 hour news makes it possible to be much better informed about matters that actually matter, along with plenty that don't of course. The latter does prevent a good bit of fraud, abuse, and corporate sculduggery.

I guess you take the bad with the good. What's sad is that younger people don't have a clue about what the alternative (life in the 50s and 60s) was like so they can't make an informed choice about these policies and practices when given the opportunity to do so.

Scenario 9:

George is black and John is white.

1957: George is forced by law to go to a segregated black school with inferior teachers, facilites, and resources while John is forced to go to an all white school with all the resources he needs for a proper education. One day while George is coming home from school he attempts to pick up on a white girl. Days later he is dragged from his home and lynched. no one is convicted of murder.

2007: George and John are able to go to school together and receive the same level of education.

...it goes both ways...

What you are speaking of is progress in recognizing equality, regardless of race, long overdue.

Some of the other comparisons show we have just gone too far in an attempt to be politically correct, almost to the point of paranoid.....
