Default Hernia... Surgical Procedure?

So my friend has developed a hernia. He's 39. He was wondering how he should go under? Locally or completely? If completely, do they just put a mask on you and let you go under? Anyone with any experience? Thanks!

I have to go in for hernia surgery this summer and I'm having them put me completely under. The last time I had surgery was to remove a tumor in my wrist which was wrapped around a nerve. I had them give me a block rather than put me under and the block wore off in the middle of the surgery. Because the surgeon was in the delicate stage of getting the tumor free of the nerve, they couldn't give me another block. It would probably not happen again in a million years, but I'm not taking a chance when they're going to be working so closely to my whatsis.

Completely. They just give you a shot and you don't know or feel a thing. An hour or so later you walk up and it's history.

Another option is to use an epidural block, this would effectively eliminate Dean's fear of the anesthethic wearing off during the procedure while at the same time avoiding the risks (albeit minimal) of general anesthesia.
Epidural blocks (AKA spinal anesthesia) is also used for cesarean sections, etc.

Depends somewhat on the hernia. If it is the typical tear along the bottom of the abdomen near the uhhh...crotch then you want to be out. They cut, repair, install a prosthetic membrane with sutures and then stitch the skin. After you wake up, they keep you around untill you can pee. Many men have difficulty urinating after the anesthesia and it can cause a real problem for some guys.

All in all, its a real day at the beach
