Wow, would I love to be there. I well remember the original article as I was a Car and Driver subscriber at the time (as I have been for most of my adult life.) Thanks for the post, Dave. It was a great update to a story that just never seems to die.
BTW, some may not be aware that David E. Davis is back on the Car and Driver editorial staff.

I always that DED was 'full of himself' but I enjoyed most of his writings any way. I wasn't aware he was back.

David E. certainly lacks the humility possessed by most automotive pundits such as Brock Yates.

I thought the comparrison was a joke in 1964 and I still think so today. Car and Driver is a crack-pot magazine.

What, come on Bill, didn't you see that Pontiac at LeMans that year? I did see Fireball Robert's but you know what, he was driving a Ferrari.
I preferred C&D over R&T but then I didn't carry a pocket protector either.

C and D (It's not C&D, Bill) is a crackpot mag. It also has contained more good writing over the years than all its competators combined.
As to the GTO vs. GTO comparo...Of course the guys at C and D knew it was a joke...a joke that would put their little mag on the map after struggling under its new name for three years.
Car and Driver editorial alums include Bruce McCall, Jean Shepherd, and P.J. O'Rourke. Its probably the only magazine with a contributing editor who twice ran (and twice crashed) at Indie. Car and Driver was responsible for the embarrassing disclosure by Ford that the 99 SVT Cobra Mustang didn't make quite as much power as advertised. Car and Driver did an instrumented test on a road grader, a zamboni, and an aircraft carrier, among other modes of transport. Car and Driver built a CRX with TWO ENGINES, one in the front and one in the back! Where else are you gonna find this kind of stuff.
People who love vintage cars read Road and Track and Hemmings. People who love hotrods read Popular Hot Rodding and Hot Rod.
People who love high end luxury cars read the duPont Registry
People who love cars read Car and Driver
ok..maybe its just me.
