George and Martha
A report from Our Nation's Capital...
A few weeks back, a pair of bald eagles named George and Martha, that has nested near the Wilson Bridge for some years, was broken up when another female attacked Martha in a fight over territory. Martha was seriously injured and taken to a rehab place about 90 miles from the bridge. There was some concern that she might not live, and the eggs did not survive when George was unable to sit on them all of the time. Observers were unsure whether George would pair up with the new female or not. It was a potentially devastating blow to all those who had come to love these majestic birds.
However, Martha made an amazing recovery and was released in early May. In mid May the happy couple were reunited when Martha flew back to George. They were observed together near the bridge, and are expected to nest there again next year. No sign of the offending female. This is such a nice ending to what could have been a tragedy.

I read somewhere that the aggressive female was named Anjolina and that she was last seen winging her way over the Atlantic on her way to adopt a chick or two.
