Looks as if Sherwin-Williams sells concrete stain specifically for garage floors in solvent-based as well as water-based formulas.

So who has an idea about the stripping process? Chemical or mechanical?

http://ucoatit.com/pgs/main.htm

I know several people who have used U Coat-it. That's what I am planning to use on my garage floor.

Awwwwww, Patty, you are speaking to my heart. I know you said you do not want the checker board effect, but that is what I have had at the last two houses. You can pick any color you want.

The first one was done with Armstrong Industrial tile (the stuff you walk on at the supermarket). Mrs. GM3 made me have it professionally done. The materials cost me about $500 and the labor another $500. It covered a three car garage (about 600 sq. ft.) It is glued down and permanent. I only had to replace 1 tile in the 4 1/2 years I had the garage. Up-keep is a strip and wax once or twice a year. It took me the best part of a Saturday to do, but I took pride in making it look good. Here are some pics:

At this house, I went with something that I could pick up and take with me if/when we move. I bought Race Deck: http://www.racedeck.com/ It cost me a lot more, but I could install it myself. It clicks together and can be removed easily. Again, you can pick any color and they will even custom make you a design if you want. I went with the 'steel' look, but they have other finishes as well. Here are some pics:

This product looks pretty impressive and the "kit" is not that expensive. I'm impressed that they include a degreaser in the package....adhesion of the new topcoat would worry me. If you scroll to the bottom of the link, there is even an upgrade to include color chips....giving a sort of 'terrazzo' appearance. I would like to see a sample of this....

I the checkboard effect....not sure why Patty is thinking 'plain jane' It's not like her to be shy.....

Btw, did you clean up the garage just for these pics....or does it always look 200% neater than anyone else's kitchen

Patty, you should consider Gomarlin's modular tiles. You would save the removal of the old peeling paint b/c this product does not require adhesive or any subfloor prep It could be a DIY project w/help from the local SoCal yokels

If you don't like the extreme checkerboard effect, you could still go with a subtle alternating pattern....like light and dark gray, etc.
