Emil, hockey ranks in the top four in almost every list (to my surprise - it even beat badminton). Go Wings!

Bill, as I have heard you say more than once.....'follow the money'. With that in mind, it won't happen in your lifetime.
I expect to live another 20 years, god willing. I think this that is all it will take. What does the NFL do when there are only a fraction of the quality players they have today? I'm sure they will struggle on, but what will it look like and who will attend? As for ti being the most popular sport in America, they are currently losing ground:

I don't consider myself a football fan, although I do tape the Steelers and Lions when I can get them. Yesterday both played and I watched both games with lots of fast forwarding. They were both 1PM games. What I really noticed most was how many more TV ads there were in the Steelers game vs. the Lions game. Both lost but the Lion's 8 seconds to go loss was as strange as it gets.

Didn't grow up watching sports other then boxing because of my Dad. Other then the random Superbowl party with friends as an excuse to party, I never had much interest in watching team sports. It is interesting how many people treat games like football as real life bearing, and somehow an association with some form of patriotism to the extreme. Weird stuff from an outsider perspective

I have always been drawn to motorsports/racing as far more compelling and exciting to me.

Well, it's pretty much the same phenomenon. You get invested in something that doesn't make one bit of difference in your daily life. Same as getting hooked on a TV show. It's all entertainment. Entertainment has achieved a very high value in our society.

One more thought on the future of Football. The current political controversy isn't going to do the ratings much good. Leaving the politics aside, I think the core fans of the sport are put off by it. It remains to be seen if ANY of them are able to stop watching the product or boycott the vendors. My guess is a few will, but not enough to make a difference. Kind of like the reaction to the baseball strike mentioned above.

There a a number of fans who are ticket holders, that buy NFL items, jerseys, coats, hats etc, that are burning these items and posting the videos on the internet.

Just search on "nfl fans burning jerseys" on youtube.

Lots or really angry people over this.

That's interesting. Then, when they get over it, they will buy NEW jerseys. I KNEW there had to be some sort of hidden agenda here.
