I have an original Maytag Neptune, and that was the washer that killed Maytag (now part of Frigidaire). My understanding is that the new ones have many fewer issues with smell. Apparently fabric softener exacerbated the problem, but that's anecdotal.

It appears many folks with front loading washing machines have a problem with odors. I know this has been talked about on this forum. Here's an article which may be of interest.

The clothes are clean ... but what's that smell?
Stinky front-loading, high-efficiency washers give consumers ‘the willies’

When you buy a new washing machine, you don’t expect it to stink up your house. But that seems to be a common problem for people who own high-efficiency front-loading washers.

What's that smell?
As part of the instruction on the LG that we have they tell you keep the door open after a wash so it can dry out.
We just stick a towel in the door for part of the day and all is fine

We cant leave our LGs door cracked, its spring loaded its either shut
or open all the way. There's no smell when its shut, but when you open it
however.....

This is one reason we bought a high-efficiency toploader...

I'm afraid a frontloader with the door open would be a cat magnet...

I haven't had a problem with my Maytag but I do know two people that did. On one, Maytag replaced the unit with a top loader and the other was cleaned and re-built by Maytag.
I threw my Maytag out after three years and multiple service calls.

We have a top load Maytag that's 7 years old now, never a problem.
