The wear indicator is on the inside pad, so you shouldn't totally wear down the inside without any warning. (This is not true for track pads, which typically have no wear indicators.)
If you have a massively big difference between inside and outside, check the slide pins to make sure they are not binding.

You may want to look at different compounds - just be sure you keep within the operating temperature range (ie don't get race pads for the street - you'll never keep them up to operating temp).
