I just upgraded my wife's computer from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I think I like the Metro Screen on Win8.1 better than the new Start Menu on Win10. Edge seems nice, but I don't yet see where it's much of an improvement over IE.

In general it seems like a nice update, but I'll know better once I use it more. Unfortunately all of my computers are running Win8.1 Enterprise and the free update to Win10 is not yet available.

I've been using Windows 10 (beta/tech preview/release candidate) for 6 months now and about 2 weeks ago they upgraded me to Windows 10 Pro. I started using it in beta form because I hated Windows 8/8.1 so much (and I didn't have a problem with ME or Vista) and didn't have a spare copy of Windows 7 to put on my new build. I thought I would have to reinstall Windows 8 to get my free upgrade, but they upgraded us anyway. I like it... But things have been harder (without the search function) since Windows 8.

Thank for the heads up. I knew Microsoft was going to offer W10 for free. Their stock went down the day they announced it.
I think I'll go reserve a copy for both or our Windows machines running 8.1.
Thanks for the reminder.

Is Windows 10 Pro that much better than Win 7 Pro? Are any propriety programs having issues with Win 10? Did any of you need to re-install any programs? Email addresses and stored messages?

Mucho!

Search is there. Right click on the Start (Window) button.

I've been using it since Win10 was released to Alpha/Beta testers and have had no problems with legacy/proprietary programs. We run some pretty old (designed for Win 3.1) programs and, so far, there have been no problems. Naturally, YMMV so, if you have a second machine you can install the update on and test, that's always the safest way. I've been running Win10 (all of the test cycle versions) in a virtual machine so if anything went wrong, it would not affect my primary machine.

OK...I've put off the upgrade until Sat AM to be sure I'm ready. I didn't do a full backup before I upgraded from XP to Win 8.1, which went fine. I just copied files to my external drive. But I guess I should do a full one this time. I honestly know nothing about the Cloud so I've avoided it. I just have the one PC and not all these devices everyone else has. What software do you use for backup? I read CrashPlan was good, but there are a lot of possibilities and it's hard to choose. I really have nothing important to back up other than docs and pictures. Also, the recommendation seems to be disable or uninstall and reinstall antivirus software to avoid problems with the upgrade. Anyone do that? Anything else I should be aware of before I hit the install button? Yeah, I'm being super cautious. Thanks.

I'm going to holg onto my win7 machine for a while.
I use the Xp virtual machine which is part of win 7 for access to my scanner.
Win 10 dropped this feature.... booo hisss.
I suppose i could always add it as a virtual machine under 10 on my own.
It's going to be interesting to see how the licensing model works with win 10.
they have been tending towards an annual subscription.

Do you have the installation media for any programs that you use a lot? (MS Office comes to mind but I'm sure there are others you use all the time). Your docs and pictures are the most personal things on your computer, you should definitely back them up. I don't think you'll have any problem with the upgrade, but I'd still back up those two directories. I do clean installs every time (going from beta version to beta version) but you should't need to do that.
