I grew up on polenta (yellow corn meal) so when I first tried grits it was a natural for me, texture and flavour isn't far off, but they are different. Now that I think of it I pretty much like most items made with corn meal - cornbread muffins, and my wife's family often have cornbread (Portuguese) which I also love.

Yeah my main thing is that they are not soupy. Even as far down as parts of oklahoma where I grew up, some still make them soupy and put cream and sugar in them ...big nope for me. Gotta be much thicker and no sweet stuff! Cheesy is good though.
