Feeding the Birds
#701
A sad story. For the last week we have been watching a young Blue J hoping around the garden with an attentive parent always near by. I'm sad to say that yesterday morning he laid his head down in the grass and died. The parent stayed for a couple on minutes and then flew away. I know it's a bird, a wild one at that, but it still makes me want to cry. Life, all life, is precious.
Kathy says she hears them saying "Mike, Mike, Mike" whenever we are outside!

We've gotten to know by sight some of the wild birds, etc. in the yard and it's hard to see them die. One that sticks in my mind was our albio cardinal.

Strangely enough on our evening walk yesterday there was another young Blue J that had died.
Dave, I would have missed your cardinal as well. I understand that in the bird world they do not let "different" survive.

Cool pelicans, Mike!
That is so sad about the Blue Jays and the beautiful cardinal. Only one wren fledged from the nest this spring out of 3 babies. No idea why. Mother Nature...
The flycatchers were too late for housing again this year, the bluebirds have been hogging the nest boxes. The flycatchers had to nest in a tree. Here is a happy set of photos of them from 2 years ago.

^ very cool, I like the little guy poking his head out . . . or maybe that's the "live-in".

My bird feeders are quite active. I'm re-filling frequently. I have the usual cast of characters, still mostly sparrow free with my fishing line deterrent. The house finch seems to have a good appetite. Yesterday while home for lunch, I spotted this guy heading towards the feeder. Not sure how successful he/she was. I had the zoom on the older camera so I had to take a couple pics through the window. Who cares if I get back to work late after lunch? I kind of don't these days but I was back on time.

Also posted this link in the Odds and Ends Photos thread. Stunning video of a hummingbird drinking, etc.

Hmm I think the house sparrows have figured out that the fishing line on the feeders won't harm them. I've had quite a few eating from the feeders again....need to hang some reinforcements.
