And yesterday... never have seen so many cardinals in the backyard.

And almost all the brown birds on the ground are female cardinals.

All I can say is that Cardinals must really like safflower seed!

Wondering if there were so many of them, that they kept the sparrows away?

Squirrels quit eating at that feeder since the seed change also.

Thanks for the tip about safflower seed I will try that. I know the squirrels need to eat but they occupy the bird feeders so that the birds don't get much of a chance.

Here is another question. I noticed from your photographer that your lawn is bare where the birds feed. I have the same problem. How do you deal with that?

VERY cool Mike! I have never had more than one male and one female cardinal in my yard.

They seem to enjoy safflower seed at my house as well.

My local squirrels aren't as picky. They will eat the safflower seed too. I've had good luck keeping squirrels out of the seed feeders with the feeders that are spring loaded on the perches. The ports close when the squirrels try to feed.

I have one of these: Squirrel Buster

Well, about every 3-4 weeks, I just rake up/pick up the shells.....

I know it will be bare there, and don't mind.

We never had this many cardinals before we got the feeder in the picture.

Seems like the house/hopper feeder is their favorite type of feeder (at least at our house).

Even though most of the females seem to eat from the ground, and a lot of the males from the feeder.

Looks like spring is just around the corner.

We had a pair of robins at the bird bath.
