We had a visit today from a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker.

Got a little fresh air and some steps today. Made three stops on my rounds. Tree swallows, blue birds, yellow rumped warbler, chickadee. All typical subjects, but the only one I see in my yard is the chickadee.
Here are Mr. and Mrs. Blue Bird. Do any of you get these in your yard? Do you put out meal worms?

I was surprised to learn we (clearly not me) put out meal worms, after I asked what she was sprinkling in the feeders. When we get blue birds they only are around a few days.

Looks as if they are here year round, numbers increasing in winter. I don't see them much in the winter, perhaps because my walking is sporadic when it's cold. Eastern bluebirds are small members of the thrush family that inhabit fields and clearings throughout Massachusetts. Bluebirds were once rare in Massachusetts during the winter, but in recent years the number of winter bluebirds has been climbing.

Not feeding them, but seeing some blue jays again. Also lots of robins. Considering we are a semi urban environment, we have lots of birds. Very cool to watch hawks swooping outside the balcony windows. Have not seen the lovely vultures that roosted on the office balcony across from my old apt, but they are probably around.

I think they are both wondering when I'm going to refill the feeder. (Crummy cell phone picture)
