I put out fresh thistle bags before I left today. A gold finch went right to one of them. It rained so much yesterday, the thistle in the other bags was like mud. I also made sure the seed feeders were filled, but I took down the hummingbird feeders. They have plenty of flowers to feed on. Since we will be gone for a bit, I didn't want them eating from feeders that didn't have fresh feed. They may be gone by the time we get back.

The house sparrows are over taking my feeders! For the longest time, a bit of fishing line hung on the feeder or on the shepherd's hook really seemed to deter them. No so much lately. I must get 20 of them for every chickadee or titmouse.

I may try switching to safflower seed again to see if that slows them down.

Anyone have any other suggestion?

I just yesterday put out the poles for the winter feeders. I also cleaned the finch feeder and will refill that tomorrow.

The winter feeders will go out this week as the weather gets colder.

We have had a ton of sparrows trying to feed off the suet blocks but the woodpeckers keep them away.

I thought your HOA had issue with feeding birds? Can you feed thistle and suet? The sparrows are on the suet too. We have woodpeckers but the sparrows outnumber them. However, if a woodpecker shows up, it will show the sparrows who the boss is.

No written HOA rules just as long as we don’t feed the geese.

We just did a restoration on our favorite feeder. A sawdust creator who lives nearby put a new ash roof on it and Donna painted a coat of urethane on it today - it will outlive us ten fold.

I am being overrun by sparrows. I may stop feeding for a week or two, but I fear they won't go away since many likely reside in the shrubs surrounding my yard. The weighted fishing line on/near the feeders just isn't deterring them any longer. Guess it's back to the drawing board.

Take one of what I hope is a sparrow deterrent. Take two is more flush to the top of the feeder and I shortened the length of the lines. Yes, bottle caps on the fishing line. Left over from Rick’s short lived beer brewing hobby
