Feeding the Birds
#1991
Taking all my feeders down until at least mid-April. The South Carolina Dept of Natural Resources has asked all its residents to stop using feeders due to a virus that is killing pine siskins. They believe it is being spread by feeders (particularly those that are not regularly cleaned).

Threadkiller, oh no. Please somebody post your bird pictures.
I love birds, but we have doves around now and their hoo hoo hoo call is so boring, can't stand it. I know, picky me. Anyone else dislike it?

I've got one bird that starts in at about 4:30 a.m and doesn't stop sounds like a sprinkler, drives me batty sometimes. Still a couple of weeks away though.

We have lots of big woodpeckers on our land in Colorado. They are constantly pecking holes in the wooden facias and logs on the cabin. I'm having a chinker come out to plug the holes and re-chink the logs where they need it. Unfortunately birds of all kinds fly into the large windows at the top, and then plummet to the deck - mostly they are just stunned, but sometimes they break their neck and don't make it. The hummingbirds have not returned yet, but my nectar feeders are ready for them.

Yeah, I had a problem with woodpeckers when I lived in the lake house. Not fun to be awakened with the loud pecking on the siding. I had no idea what it was at first.

The first time I thoroughly cleaned my windows I constantly had birds flying into them with some breaking their necks so now I have an excuse to leave them dirty.

You might try Bird window decals. We have used them for years on our large kitchen window and they seem pretty effective. We still get a few birds that hit it but it is usually a dumb dove and often when something like a hawk has startled them.

Seems they have big peckers out in CO. That's a heck of hole. While we have lots of lots of woodpeckers, and a big variety, they generally don't have any interest in the house. Probably because they have so many options with trees near the feeders.
