Feeding the Birds

This guy took 720,000 photos to get the perfect Kingfisher shot. He has a lot more time, determination, and perseverance than I have.

Those damn house sparrows are wiping out the feeders as fast as I fill them. Even the one with safflower seed which is not their preference. They are just kicking the seed to the ground. I think our lovely shrubs offer too many of them a home, wonder if I can evict them?
They do keep the song birds away. I've looked for ways to deter the sparrows. There used to be a Magic Halo available. Basically, a wire circle with weighted filament wire hanging from it. It had differing opinions as to if it worked. It looked like this:
My continued research just showed some weighted fishing line hanging from the top of a feeder in front of the feeding ports. Tonight I tied fishing line to the tops of two feeders on all four sides. Weighted them down with some bead from some cheap jewelry I bought and never wore. I did two out of three seed feeders. IF it works, I think it will work better on one of the two feeders as it has more of a "roof" from which I hung the wires.
I'll report back.
PS Probably discussed this in the original bird feeding thread. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm listening.

Once the sparrow found the feeder not many other birds come around to that feeder. The thistle feeder is loaded with gold finches though.

I should try filling a thistle bag again. I didn't have much luck with thistle feeders. At least some of the song birds will nibble on the thistle.....

The finches, chickadees, and titmice(sp??) cleaned out the thistle feeder in about two and one half days. At the cost of thistle seed I will be broke by the first of the year
