A downy or hairy woodpecker has the red patch on the back of the head. They are also the only ones that have the white stripe down the back. Looks like a juvenile on the left.

Yes, you are correct. I had never noticed the red patch on top of the head until yesterday which indicates a juvenile. Going through a ton of bird food.

Got the new seed catcher. I drilled some holes in the one I installed and put it below it. Then, I read the instructions that said to put it just 6" below the feeder (hum, why did they give me the potential to let it down 6'?). In case, I hooked it up much closer. I may have to most likely remove the hard plastic one installed, which as you can see is not much smaller. In any case, it seems well built.

Our vacation companions did a little bird feeding today. Picture of a picture! Only 10.99 for two 4 x 6 photos..Canadian money so that's a bargain!
