I'm going to check Consumer Reports but I know there are electronic review places on line, too. My current VHS/DVD player is ancient and not playing all the DVDs I put in although they will play on my computer. It won't play VHS at all, but I had all my home VHS of my kids and when I was a kid transferred to DVDs so I can live without VHS now.

Anyway, any advice on good brands? Bad brands? I don't need fancy. Just want to play Netflix and my Jerry advised me to go Blu-ray. I had already purchased a VHS/DVD player but I decided he was right so I took it back to Costco before I ever took it out of the box.

Get a PS-3. It will play blue rays and video games all for one low price.

Patty, I am totally disappointed that you not only eat, but LIKE brussel sprouts. I open this thread hoping for info on BluRay, or maybe some narrative about how you drove your new NSX and blew off some Corvettes, and instead I read about those terrible green things restaurants are serving now to save money on real vegetables. Next you'll be telling us you like cucumber sandwiches. In the future, stick to NSXs, S2Ks or Blu Rays, or I shall be forced to ask that you sell your sports cars, buy a diesel Ford F250 and join their enthusiasts site.

I recently bought the Sony BDP-550. The main reason for the 550 instaed of the 350 was it had all of the current audio "codecs" (decoding for all of the new HD audio formats).

What display do you have and what audio? If you do not have a very new receiver and don't plan on getting a new one soon, then I would look at the Sony 350 or the Panasonic BD-60K. Or if you are married to VHS and want it incorporated BD-70K. The BD-80K is a step up in technology.

Personally I like the Sony or Oppo. The Oppo will be a bit pricy, but they make an incredible product and have wonderful customer support.

One other thing. The load time for most Blu-Ray players is a little long ~1+/- Min. The reason is that BD players are essentially graphics computers and they take a little bit of time to boot up.

The picture, many of the discs are "wow" quality. Cars is incredible!

Purchased the Sony BR. Not the top model but the next one down. They were runing sales here in Dallas for $175. If you cannot connect the unit to your TV with an HDMI connection I would opt for a 1080P up player. As you will lose a lot of the benfits if you go "S" video or RCA cable connection.

By the way BR is great. Most amazing picture and sound using HDMI connections. I like the Sony as you can hook it to your PC for firmware upgrades from the Sony site.
