Drug Testing!
Wifely Unit was required to take a government mandated drug test at the doctors office today. Apparently when the program is completely implemented that will be a standard part of any visit to a doctor.

I'm also curious as to why this was done?
I know certain jobs require drug tests. There have been "suggestions" that those on public assistance should receive drug tests, but I don't know of any required drug tests at a doctor's appointment.

Urine test. This was at Southern Orthopaedic Specialists - not the Eagles Landing Family Practice office. Technician said it was new government mandated procedure. I was so shocked that I did not think to ask if it was Georgia.
From what I can find on the internet, this may be a DEA program. They appear to be starting with the "Pain Management" and "Sports Medicine" doctors and expanding from there. Word is this program will expand to all doctors.
The cost will be billed to our insurance and we will have to pay what our insurance does not cover.
Wife is not a government employee unless you consider drawing Social Security a form of government employment. I let her retire in 1992.

In Florida, you have a choice of buying workers comp with or without a drug test. Depending on the job code, that can get very expensive without it.
Somehow I don't think it's fair that some guy smokes a doobie and then falls off a ladder 3 weeks later and somehow his workers comp insurance is denied.
My libertarian bones say legalize it all and let Darwin sort it out.

I find this very scary. Also, I would think that the result of that test as any other information in your medical file remains confidential.

I would not expect to have to provide a sample if I was seeing an ortho doc for an initial visit or routine follow ups after surgery. Prolonged use of pain meds due to chronic pain may fall under a different category.
