This NE thread hits on a good subject for discussion. I thought I'd start a similar one here.

I've never been one to buy stuff, just on impulse; thankfully, neither has my wife.
Cars are my passion. Horses are hers.

My MG is the classic love-hate relationship but I could never part with it. MGA's have been a big part of my life for 40 years. OMG, has it been that long!

On the other hand, I have no remorse with having sold the S2000 except for the loss of track days and not having one for Vintage meets. If +1 could have enjoyed it with me, I am sure I would still have it but her back problem prevented that. So leting it go simplified my life.

Were it not for her, I would sell the A6 as well. It's a wonderful car but I never use it. My old truck has become my daily driver. However, +1 won't let me sell it.

The most I've ever gone overboard was collecting S2000 collectible stuff, which I plan sell as soon as I can get organized to do so.

I happy to say we kept our life pretty simple through out the years.

My wife and I have too much crap. I keep trying to talk her into downsizing. I'd like to sell everything but my motorcycle, the S2000, and whatever she can fit in the trunk and head south and buy a simple small house for cash and start over.

I have a lot of "significant" assets but almost no small consumer items. I think the latest electronic gadgets are a big waste of time and money. I'm sure the gadget guys feel the same way about my boats.

I am at the stage where I am trying to declutter. I got rid of a lot of old car parts on e-bay. The Healey 3000 is pretty much done, so I'll start going through the left over parts and selling them off. I think I'll have the basement cleaned up by the spring. Then I really need to go through the attic and get rid of a bunch of stuff that no one will ever use again. At some point in the next two to three years, I expect my son will move out. When that happens, I will try to give him a lot of the furniture we have that no one ever uses. Hopefully, the real estate market will recover a bit and I'll sell the big house. But then I'll buy a smaller house and build a four car garage for working on cars. At that point, the collecting might start all over again.

We don't have what I'd call a ton of stuff. I've got a few gadgets, but not the latest and greatest in most cases. We have one more car than we do residents in our house, but we're not ready to part with that extra car.

We're pretty casual people, so there's no collection of Italian shoes or fancy purses in my closet. I don't have an attic full of stuff that hasn't been used in 20 years, and the basement is in pretty good shape too.

I'm pretty good at keeping up with the clutter, I don't keep stuff I don't use. When I buy clothing or shoes, I often go through the closet and "in with the new, out with the old" comes into play. If I haven't worn it or used it in over a year, chances are I don't need to keep it.

When I went for a walk the other day, I noticed one of my neighbors has a bit of "stuff." You could not fit a bicycle in his garage, never mind a car. He's also got a big steel container in the rear of his backyard. Now that's a guy with lots of "stuff", or maybe junk.

It never ceases to amaze me how many home owners don't use the garage for cars. Especially here in the frozen north. The last thing I want to do on a 20 degree morning is scrape the car windows.

I know. I can't imagine not using a garage if you have one. We have no garage, and I know the kind man who cleans my car after a storm (My +1 ) would love to have one.

I do have an auto start on my vehicle which saves him some time.

I got rid of so much crap when we retired to the beach either by selling it or donating it to charity or simply trashing it. I do have a 2 car garage and huge basement but I refuse to clutter it up again with junk. I just dropped off some more stuff to charity. The garage has room for both vehicles and the basement has my workshop, fitness area, grandkids play area and lots of storage space. I could never retire to a condo.

My boss/ neighbor up the street rented a dumpster to help de-clutter.
He filled it twice.

I know I have to go through it at some point and I am not looking forward to it.

A little at a time is the key Jerry. Take a bag or a box and go through it and get rid of it this week. Next week, take another one out. Also, don't underestimate what things will sell for on e-bay. After a while, selling stuff on e-bay becomes fun.
