Did you ever own a Pontiac?
By now everyone has heard Pontiac, after 83 years, will soon qualify for entry into the Orphan Car Show (cars who's manufacturer's are dead).
How many Pontiac's did you have in your past?
I got my driver's license driving a 1956 B&W Pontiac (dad's car) and use to think I was a hot shoe when drag racing on the back roads of PA. Over the years I owned two.
The first was a 1961 white Tempest bought in 1967, during my last year of college. It was a temporary replacement as I had totally worn out my Spitfire.
My last Pontiac was a 1971 light blue Catalina just prior to my second son being born; it replaced my 1968 Camaro which had becoming too small for our growing family. At the time I worked in Pontiac, MI and drove by the plant every day. Then the high oil prices hit and I bought my first Japanese car - a Toyota Corona MkII - and drove Japanese cars from then on.

My dad was not a GM man, He always drove Chrysler products except for a couple of early fifties Hudson Hornets along the way. In 1957 he and I took a trip to Michigan to pick up a new four door Starchief from the factory and then drove it back to Colorado. I remember I didn't like it very well, because it had a hydramatic transmission, but it did have a spirited V8 under the hood.

Parents had a 70 Pontiac Catalina. Best friend in high school had a 68 GTO with a Hurst dual gate shifter and one of those 8 track tapes which bolted to the transmission so it wouldn't get stolen. He eventually put a Holley 4 barrel and headers on it. It was damn quick in a straight line.

A very sad day indeed. My cousin had a 64 Tempest which was my first real love of cars.
I have a 69 Tempest and a 79 Grand Prix (my first new car).
The Tempest was a great car, except for rebuilding the carb, and the Grand Prix was a nice car, but had very significant fit and finish issues. I sold the Grand Prix for my first Honda.
I am very sad to see Pontiac go. It was GMs "performance" line, but it's time has gone.
An aside I was astounded to see that GM is selling off Opel/Vauxhall, and the projected buyer.....Fiat. After they buy Chrysler.
