I was at one cruise night in '07 and was told yay I didn't belong there. I was the only "Jap Car" there and didn't feel the love. In our area at the time 1 in 3 people worked for Ford assembling either cars, trucks or engines or there were a subcontractor to Ford. I left and let the push rod pigs have their fun.

We have a cruise night locally every last Friday of the summer month's where the downtown is blocked for a show - anything and everything is welcome, no matter the age. In fact, there's one tonight. 50% of the cars are the same ones all season. I've only taken the MG once for grins. We walk down a couple blocks to see what's new and then its off to the club nearby. I go to three all British car shows each summer, mainly just to have beers with the boys. The only place I really love is seeing the vintage cars out on the track; much better than on the grass.

Seems like there is a cruise night almost every weekend in one of the coast towns down here and has been for years.

What's new to our area is Cars and Coffee...which finally hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast about a year ago. Been to one and will probably make the July edition. At the last one I made it to, I saw several NSX's (including mine), a couple of S2000s and lots of other fun stuff from old British sports cars to McLarens to a BMW I-8 to an old Alpina in lovely condition to Porsches old and new. There was a smattering of muscle cars but nothing like the cruise-ins down here where they dominate.

I am now a proud member of the Northern New Jersey Street Rod Association. It's an honor and a privilege and for $2.00 anyone can be so honored. Anyway, that's the cost of joining and showing your car. It's two dollars per week. There is a drawing for a door prize of $25.00 and the rest goes to a local children's hospital. When I pulled up to the entrance and asked if "there's any room for a little Japanese sports car" I was told that anyone can show anything as long as they contribute $2.00. As a matter of fact, that sort of put me in a fun mood.

There weren't too many sports cars. Most of the cars are American Iron from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Many muscle cars and many hot rodded cars. A few restored classics and a few interesting old vehicles. There was a restored Jeepster (absolutely beautiful) and a pristine Ford Model A racing car (a race car built on a Model A chassis), an old fire truck and a few other really nice old and interesting vehicles.

There were about 75 to 100 cars there tonight. There were 4 sports cars. My S2000, a brand new Miata, a Porsche 911, and a Triumph TR-6. And there were two Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Japanese cars and bikes don't have very much appeal among the people who were there, but a few of the younger people walked over to my S2000 and took a look. All in all the S didn't get too much love.

I had a great time. Even though I'm not much into the American muscle, it's still nice to spend a warm evening with car people shooting the breeze, talking cars, and most anything else that comes up. I'm going again next week and bringing my camera. I'll post some pictures when I do.

I drive my S2000 to the odd car show/cruise night/cars and coffee event around Chicagoland. I always try to strike a balance of parking on the periphery/near the event, to say "hey, I've got a car that's more interesting than the average Accord and some people might like it, but I in no way think it belongs front and center with the really cool iron so I'm parking it over here." In 20 or 30 years I'll feel the car deserves to be front and center much like an MGB used to be commonplace but now is interesting and different.
