I totally agree. Love that comment "big bite of the sh**sandwich of life." Had me . Connie, you certainly have a much better attitude than I would have had. Anything that some stupid jerk does that could cost me my life has a seriously bad effect on my attitude. I guess its something that is not the fault of the installer, but . . . makes me kind of scared and a tad suspicious.

Connie, glad to hear you are OK! That's awful scary to have the wheel blowout like that. Gotta be a mfg defect of some kind. I hope the store makes things right with you!

I've no idea but thankfully she's ok. That's a well known brand found on many upscale cars but you never know anymore. Here's an email I just received from a friend who's travels the world going to tire plants. It follows up on a discussion we were having about tires from China:

Just an FYI - this is one of several such reports I have seen recently, I
thought you'd be interested to see it because it helps to explain why I
felt it best to avoid tire made in China wherever you can.

The most disturbing thing about this incident is that it involves a
reputable Korean tire company, Kumho, whose tires are very good out of
Korea. I am surprised their quality systems didn't catch it and prevented
it from happening. It serves to convince me that there is a fundamental
problem in the Chinese industry, where a willingness to cut corners to save
pennies exits, this is probably more acceptable on shoes and knives and
forks etc. but when it comes to safety critical items like tires, where our
lives depend on them, then I'd prefer to steer well clear.

Beijing, China, March 31 2011 -- China's General Administration of Quality
Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has ordered its offices throughout
the country to begin a nationwide tyre inspection.

The move came after Kumho Tire Co.'s plant in the north China port city of
Tianjin was found to have used an excessive amount of recycled rubber
during tyre production.

The inspection is not restricted to Kumho tyres. It also applies to
products of other tyre manufacturers in China, according to a circular
issued by the administration.

Many Chinese motorists have complained that Kumho's tyres wear out quickly,
according to an investigative report done by the official China Central
Television Station.

After initially denying the report, Kumho admitted using excessive amounts
of recycled rubber in the Tianjin plant. The Korean tyre maker said it
would order a tyre recall.

In its circular, China's regulatory agency ordered its Tianjin office to
closely monitor the tyre recall at Kumho's Tianjin plant.

The agency also alerted all Kumho tyre users in China to watch out for
bulges and cracks in their tyres, and report such defects to the agency's
local offices.

Aside from Tianjin, Kumho has tyre plants in Nanjing and Changshu in east
China's Jiangsu province. The three plants, with a combined annual
production capacity of 30 million tyres, supply a wide range of automakers
operating in China.

Customers include General Motors, Volkswagen, Hyundai and PSA, as well as
domestic Chinese brands such as Great Wall Motor Co. and Jianghuai
Automobile Co.

Steve, I find this entire thread to be suspect. Do you mean to tell me you were involved in an attempt to jack up an S2000 and there was no body damage as a result?

Seriously though, I'm glad you are ok, Connie. I'm sure Direct Tire will satnd behind this 100%. I'm not too sure about replacing all four tires, but I'm sure they will inspect them. Please let us knwo what they do. I just bought four brand new Vrederstein tires from them and had them mounted on my Healey and had them do the alignment on my BMW.

Results are in. Direct Tire said I rolled over a road hazard that cut the tire and I was running on a flat and didn't know it. They showed me the knotch that was at the top of the side wall. I saw this when I took a few photos for my keepsake album.

I have no reason to doubt them since I can't prove otherwise. The tire was replaced at no charge (I did not have the road hazard insurance) and gave me a loaner for the day. So, unlucky with the flat, lucky with the overall outcome.

Happy Motoring

Good outcome, but did they or do you have any idea what kind of road hazard could have caused the damage to the tire?

HI Lainey

Not a clue as to what did it. It was a real strange shape too, like notch and a big one too. Some of the raods around here are pretty lousy. I wonder when it happened since I was driving in the high lane near the jersey barrier and lots of junk gets pushed off to the side. I've never had a blow out like this. The only other one had to be nearly 30 years ago and it was the right front. It didn't jerk me all over the highway and I had no trouble getting it off the road and limping the short way home on the rim. So, if my next one is in 30 years, it'll probably be a wheel chair blow out or if I'm really spry, and orthopedic shoe flat.

Connie, I guess it doesn't matter that you don't know exactly what happened. Obviously the most important thing is that you are OK.

Someone was looking out for you.

Glad things worked out, Connie, and that the incident was not more serious.

I've dealt with one of the Discount Tire stores north of Atlanta several times on my way to the dragon. Seems like my tires were always about worn out about the time a dragon event would roll around. I've been impressed with the service. Sounds like your store took good care of you, too.
