We're in the same boat with the WRX. Average MPG is around 23-24. BUT, Rick hates to drive "boring" cars, which is why we HAD to get the car with the turbo.
He makes his own coffee at work.
Edit: The dealership he was working for sold Subaru's it wasn't tops on the car purchasing list. However, the AWD and versatility of the hatchback have come in handy.

I the fact that the turbo gives the car the ooomph it needs to accelerate on on ramps, and as needed or just because you want to accelerate.

Lainey, I could install a manual boost controller on your WRX and bump the hp up by maybe 50 - 100.........for awhile.

Driving the WRX reminds me of driving the V8 1963 Chevy Impala when I first got my license. Plenty of punch.

I've recorded around 32 MPG hwy and 25 MPG in city driving. A mix usually yields between 27-29 MPG.

You must keep in mind though, that like the S, the Si needs premium fuel as well.

Out of fairness, I do spend an awful lot of time on congested NJ road sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. My daily commute of 8 1/2 miles takes on the average 25 to 30 minutes and can take as much as an hour. It's real hard to get good fuel milage in traffic like that.
Besides, I drive the hell out of the car. As gentle as I am with my S2000 is exactly how rough I am with my Si.
So far 1 son, my youngest Adam, has learned how to drive on the Si, and my other son has learned how to drive a manual transmission on the Si. It seems the more we beat it up, the better it likes it. 66,000 miles and other than oil changes, 1 set of brakes, a transmission oil change and two sets of tires, it's never had any service. It sleeps outside every night. If I took care of my Si the way that I take care of my S2000 I'd probably get 1,000,000 miles out of it. Maybe more.
I love my Si.

Rob - I believe the difference is NJ traffic.

Take my word on it, I think about it all the time. Just the differential from regular to premium irritates me every time I fill up. And, I don't like the low mpg that my Si gets.
The tradeoff, of course, is the fun I get in driving the Si every day. I get bored very easily with boring cars. The Si serves my daily driving purposes perfectly and so I (with a certain amount of pain) accept the extra fuel cost of driving it.

258k miles on it.... mostly highway...30-31 mpg....
Had an Intregra RS and and a LS before it....
Go for the SI..... the enjoyment of daily driving is well worth the added cost.
