This isn't a new issue nor is it something that has started to happen in recent years. In 1976 the movie "Network" written by Paddy Chayefsky addressed this very issue. That is the conflict between news as news and news as entertainment.
Ever since then: I have been "Mad as Hell".

Rob,
Ever since then: I have been "Mad as Hell".

(I don't remember the next line but I think it was, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any longer.")

That is the conflict between news as news and news as entertainment. Unfortunately, as Mr. Chayefsky so well predicted, news reports the story and is good for ethics and integrity, but entertainment pays the bills and turns the profit. Paying the bills and and turning a profit wins every time. That is the kind of environment that has been created, and that is who the networks, and many of the news reporting agencies are playing to. And this is true on both sides of center.
Maybe things are starting to turn around, though. The Boston Globe's articles, which read like editorials ten years ago, are almost objective today.
I agree with those who feel that CBS News was more to blame than Michael Moore. CBS was supposed to be providing actual news - that's part of the reason they get to use public airwaves - while Moore was just out to make a buck (or a lot of them) on a sensasionalist docudrama (emphasis on the "drama" part). For those worried about his trying to influence an election, just remind yourself that the guy he was bashing won!
