Catching up with contemporary music.
All my CDs go back to the 60s 70s and 80s. I'm thinking I need to catch up. I went through some of the 90s music scene with my son. He listened to all the alternative stuff. Groups like Tool and Korn. Then he switched over to hip hop and old school rap. I'm not too interested in rap and hip hop and the alternative stuff he listened to struck me as pretty depressing.
So then I thought, maybe some of the Vintage folks have stayed current with contemporary music and could recommend some CDs to this aging rocker. My old stuff includes rock, Motown, and even some popular folk. I have hard rock and girl groups too. I enjoy good lyrics and strong voices. I'm not so much for screaming. Unique voices are good, even if they aren't all that strong. I like music that gets my head boping. I also like to sing along while driving in my car.
Anyway, let me know what you would recommend. Please include the genre of music as the name alone won't mean much to me.
Thanks in advance.

I'm a little ahead of you, but barely. My current favorite is Rob Thomas, ...something to be is the title of the CD. My 52 year-old sister turned me on to him . I love his lyrics, love the music (great wiggle songs) and at this stage of my life, he sings to my soul. I've been hitting Barnes N Noble here, listening to music and then going down four doors, to Best Buy to save $5 on a CD that I like.

Rick likes harder rock than I do.
Here are some CD's we have recently bought. I've named the artist, vs the album. Most of the time I can't tell you who is doing what song. I'm getting used to some of it. I like more upbeat stuff when we are cruising in the S. You'd have to go to someplace like Amazon to listen to some samples.
Velvet Revolver Noisy and some dirty lyrics
Puddle of Mud
Collective Soul Some of their earlier stuff is more easy to listen to. New album (last year" "Youth" was pretty good.
Three Doors Down (I liked more of their earlier stuff, not quite so hard).
Audio Slave
Some of these CD's have a few good songs, a few I find too noisy.
On the more easy listening side:
I think Erick Clapton still makes a good CD. I've got several of his, Rick thinks it's too mellow.
Very easy listening: Michael Buble. He sings some of Sintara old songs, some with a bit of jazz. I like him.
Also easy to listen to, old songs, with a touch of jazz.
A young artist. Renee Olstead.
And a local artist : Susan Tedeschi. Some of her early stuff reminded me of Janis Joplin, some if it more like the blues.
That should keep you busy for a while.

Here are some that might qualify. Some groups sound old, but they kept making some good music that never got airplay. I look for music that isn't overplayed on the radio but sounds really good, and more than one or two good songs on an album
Go to www.cdnow.com (or Amazon, same thing) and listen to samples. You can buy used CD's for dirt cheap there too, I've never been burnt by sellers with a good star rating.

A few current acts that I really find interesting:
Gorillaz
Black Eyed Peas
Pink
Shakira
Shamekia Copeland-Blues at it's best
James Blunt-sometimes a little toooo sensitive
Rob Thomas-Patty, I like him too.
I listen to XM a lot and change stations so that I get a real variety, but then I am not always sure who I am listening when it's not "classic" rock.

Some good stuff this year from :
Arctic Monkeys (English Garage Rock)
Keane (Piano/Keyboard based stuff, a bit like Coldplay fairly mellow)
Snow Patrol (Similar to Keane quite mellow)
Muse (New cd sounds a bit like Radiohead)
And the best cd so this year for me has been Red Hot Chili Peppers/Stadium Arcadium. I was expecting the worst and it is really very good.
