Hey, thanks for the welcomes!
Even though I still have a soft spot for TRs, I certainly have no regrets about buying the S2000!
I agree that the Miata is probably the most likely realistic candidate on the list. I think an off-list candidate might be an early Nissan 350Z

I recently detailed a 73 rubber bumper MGB. The guy put 20K into a new engine, suspension, exhaust system, overdrive, and other stuff. Very nice, quick and had a nice sound. Detailing a Porsche Panamera, Boxster GTS and a Macan next. Im guessing 1/4 mil for all three. And, I get to pick up and bring back all three.

I've been looking for an MGB in good condition, and they cannot be found for under 10,000. Most anything under 10,000 needs work and has some rust. You should see the horrible condition of the MGBs that are being sold for 5,000 to 7,500. I would love to own one in good condition though though. I wouldn't consider a Rubber Bumper MG. In my opinion, they really aren't the same car as the pre 1974 MGs. I had a 1972 MGB and loved it until it was vandalized.
I had a 1976 Triumph TR6 bought new. I'd never buy another. Aside from my original Fiat X-1/9 it was the least reliable, worst made car I've ever owned. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. Still, in reasonably good condition I doubt you could find one under 10,000. Even if you could, I wouldn't buy it.
If you're of a sports car mindset, I doubt you'd want an old VW Bug. Perhaps if all you want is a convertible it would do, but for any other reason it just doesn't make it. One of my colleagues has one (he is the original owner) and hardly ever drives it, just because its no fun to drive. I suppose there are enough around that one could be found for under 10,000 but it would probably need work.
I would buy a Miata in a minute if anything happened to my S2000. Every generation has been good. I don't know the market price but I would think any Miata in decent condition would be at least 10,000 and probably more.
The second generation Corvair (as pictured) was a great car. All of the "Unsafe at Any Speed" problems of the first generation (yes, Ralph Nader was absolutely right about the first generation Corvair) were fixed with the second generation. The Spyder version was one of the great American sports cars ever made. I don't know if there are many around and I have no idea of what a decent one would cost, but I'd love to own one.

If you really want a convertible (targa top) for under 10,000 you could get a Fiat (Bertone) X-1/9. Generally, they got no love when they were new and today they are selling for very little. It would take some looking to find one in good condition, and you probably would have to be willing to get a little rust, but when they were running, they were really fun cars to drive. Of course, being Fiats, they weren't running all that often. Even one in good condition will require work. Continuous work. Still, you probably could find one in very good condition for between 5,000 and 7,500. In new, showroom, restored condition they only sell for 12,000.

There isn't much around anymore that you can buy in the four figures for hobby cars. Two models that haven't been mentioned yet are the triumph spitfire and mg midget. These models hold less value than their bigger brothers the mgb and the tr6.
