Cards with "bumps" cost more to mail
My daughter sent us a Christmas card and it cost $1.39 to send it about 1 mile. I checked at the PO today and found that they charge extra because the envelop has "bumps." It has to be sorted by hand. So for you Christmas card sender's out there, be sure not to buy card's with "bumps." I mailed cards to people in Scandinavia for $0.98, no "bumps," I wonder what it would have cost with "bumps."
No wonder the PO is such a profitable organization.

Profitable? I deal with the PO as little as possible. They have lost a number of items I mailed with no clue as to what happened to them. Of course they are run by the government so that probably explains it.

Anything beyond a certain measurement (larger envelopes) or anything that cannot be put through the automated machine costs more to mail. They have to pay people, not the machines.
With bill paying on line, I don't send out much mail at all. I gave up sending Christmas cards long time ago.

I've always enjoyed sending out Christmas cards, but I think this year we're only going to send a very few to family far away. The idea of spending at least 44 cents plus the cost of a card doesn't make sense. I used to send about 75 cards every year but we'll probably only send about 5 this year.

My Mom used to send cards to those she would not be able to see over the holidays. She felt if you were going to be with folks to exchange holiday greetings, why bother sending a card?
Even if you find the cards reasonably priced, the cost of mailing can make one think twice.

hmmm the pedantic engineer would like to see the technical definition of bump according to the post office.

Any mailing that is not flat enough to go through the automated machine. I just sent keys out to our storage customers. I knew those would need extra postage, even though I wrapped them in paper and sent them in regular size envelopes.
