Patty: I many southern states, you can chose to pay a civil penalty alternative to a traffic citation. They cost about 1/3 to 1/2 more but will NOT show up on your insurance. The judge in the local country decide whether to do it but the process is often greased and known to who picks up the phone. Both my son and I had the opportunity to pay such fine "for violating local ordinances." A phone call won't hurt, right? Good luck. Running a red light cost my son $120 in
Arkansas. I paid $80 for +12 speeding in Alabama near Muscle Shoals.

In Texas they call that <deferred adjudication>. You pay more, but it does not show up as conviction anywhere -- I think you do not have to plead or admit guilt. After thirty days -- with no further violations in that county your case is dropped -- but apparently the citation is not expunged from the records. Anyway the insurance companies do not hear about it.
