Scrabble is the major addiction for a board game.....
We play 'cut-throat' Scrabble at least once a month with good friends. We have about 2 or 3 boards in different locations, as well as the 'cheater's Scrabble dictionary'
I also have the PC version which allows you to set the 'skill level' of your computer opponent

I think I need to buy a Candy Land game. We don't have one of those at Grandma's house.
Edit: Bought my Candy Land game tonight. I'm ready to play when the granddaughter gets here tomorrow!

I discovered a card game called Apples-to-apples on a dive trip last year.

Notice it's a Mensa game of the year, but it is anything but difficlt to play, and quite hilarious with a 6-10 people.

As any good midwesterner with a German heritage, I play Sheapshead, mostly with the extended family.
I remember the first semester of my freshman year, we never played in the dorms. Second semester we found out that 75% of the guys played and 50% of the women, so we played all the time. Several of the sessions, especially on the weekend, ended when too many players where too drunk to continue .

Actually, this game is only (okay, mostly) played in Bavaria, or what I would like to call "the deep south". There is a game that you play with four people called "Doppelkopf" (doublehead) that is somewhat similar and that is more popular throughout Germany, but as far as I can tell "Schafskopf" never really made it in the north.
Now, for a real German national card game, you might want to look up a game called "Skat". Since drinking beer appears to be mandatory when playing Skat, this might explain its popularity.

I started out playing checkers then moved up to chess and I love monopoly and I remember my cousins had the game operation which was fun. I also play parchessi and scrabble and another one I played as a kid was chinese checkers as well as chutes and ladders and candyland. I also remember this funky game I had with a ball bearing type ball that you would roll down chutes and slides that you had put together but I forget the name of that one.
