I am not a big Car and Driver fan, but I think that they got this right.

Awesome. That's some list we beat out! I can still close my eyes and see the first test drive I took. I ordered one the next day.

The Honda is powered by the most powerful naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine in production.
All-new, compact and naturally aspirated, the F20C is a 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC VETC inline 4 cylinder engine. It incorporates forged aluminum pistons, forged connecting rods with heat treated surfaces, carbon fibre and aluminum fibre reinforced cylinder linings, and hollow camshafts -- things normally found in race car engines. The great majority of production engines use cast, not forged, parts – an excellent value for moderate duty, but they’re not suited to the maximum stresses of this race design engine.
Virtually every engine component was designed and refined to aid the quest for high revs, from the straight port intakes, which sharpen engine response, to the low back-pressure exhaust and the light, race influenced valve springs. Particular attention was paid to ensuring efficient combustion through advanced combustion chamber design, making full use of the knowledge gained from the company’s racing activities.
Key features in realizing a 9000 rpm maximum are a relatively short-stroke design, low friction valve gear, and a very efficient oil pump. Certain components also feature a low-friction plating technique on bearing surfaces, a technology adapted directly from Honda’s Formula 1 experience.

2. The K20Z3 in my 2006 Civic Si. 2.0 litres, 4 cylinders.
3 The 235 cubic inch straight six in my 1961 Chevy Impala. It only put out 135 horsepower, and the car was the slowest thing on the road, but no matter what you did to it you couldn't make that engine stop running.
