One of the most famous of our professors when I was in graduate school was a colorful geophysicist named Cesare Emiliani, an Italian import, who did groundbreaking work in paleontology by counting shells from sea critters (little tiny shells) in ocean-bottom mud cores.
One of his late-career papers, with a post-doc, as I recall, propounded some new radical theory based on an analysis of his data combined with some other stuff. The paper engendered a long-winded rebuttal that pointed out a serious flaw in the analysis. So Cesare wrote a response to the rebuttal, got it peer-reviewed into the same journal, and so on.
The entire text of the paper was "Oops."
If he was considered colorful before that, it cemented his legacy. HPH
