Battery tender

Bill, your link sells everything that has been mentioned.

If you have concerns, you might try talking to them. I've never heard of the Battery Tender Jr ever hurting anyone's battery; in fact, XViper has recommended it often and his winters are a lot longer than mine.

I want something I can leave unattended all winter. Freq, thanks for the warning on Battery Tender. Is that the trade name of the unit you have?
I have used the same BT on motorcycles in years past, charging them off and on during the Winter months w/o issue. I have had the S2000 "charging" / "floating" for the past month, I disconnected it to go to work, a 25 minutes drive. Upon arriving at work I popped the hood to see the battery leaking.

Schumacher is a cheap brand (15-20 bucks), but I've never had one fail.

Thanks Carm, what do you have?
I just bought a Schumacher at wally-mart for $20. I'm testing it out on the Healey battery to see if it works. I'd be interested in having two. I have at least three batterys that need to be maintained all winter.

I'm not convinced that battery tenders are necessary (nice, maybe, but not necessary). Each winter, I remove my battery, take it into the basement, and leave it on a shelf for 5 months. In the spring, I trickle charge it to at least 80%, then run it for another season. I still have the original battery in my '02, and I easily got it back to 80% a few weekends ago after accidentally draining it while working on some stuff in the car.
Maybe next spring will call for a new one, but it doesn't look like it as of now.

I don't think it is good to drain a battery, and I found out this year that when the battery dies it takes about 200 miles for all the emission systems in the car to work properly. I couldn't get an inspection sticker for two weeks.

I've been using a Deltran Battery Tender Plus for years. Works great! My lawn mower battery lasted 9 years even with 6 months of storage each year. I used to switch it back and forth between the car, motorcycle, and lawn mower. I just picked up a second one so I won't be switching as much. (Got it free when I spent $200 on motorcycle gear through an online special.)

My point is that if I'm getting 7 (at least) years out of a battery with no special care, and even a little bit of abuse, then maybe it's not so important to keep it charged all the time after all.
