I worked with a number of these folks over the years and you couldn't be more correct. They were THE best and THE brightest in the world. Herman had made it to quite was quite well regarded in the organization as well.

Please, I beg to differ. As I make my living with a fair understanding telephony including the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standards (Formerly the CCITT), I have total respect for just how smart Herman is.

As I mentioned in my previous post I have had some fascinating conversations with him over the years. I am hopeful to have another one at Zippy's MWG (assuming that he and his +1 host it) and that Herman is healthy enough to make it.

Bell Labs was located very close to where I live. A number of our friends in the community are "graduates" of Bell Labs. A few of my clients are as well.

I am always in awe of them. They are simply among the most brilliant people I've ever met. The funny thing is that much like Herman, none of them have ever talked about how smart they are. They are all very humble and unassuming.

.....
? Not sure what you are differing on, Matt?

Both of you have voiced the highest respect for the Bell Labs folks.

^ I think he begs to differ on the "Some of you may not know it" part.

My boss at the software company where I worked for 9 years was from Bell labs. I've been lucky to have worked for a lot of smart people in my career so far. He was one of the smartest.
