I always thought that the BMW logo came from a stylized spinning propeller. Lately that myth has been dispelled, but I'm not so sure.

I am well aware the first MG was a modified 1923 Morris at the request of the Morris Garage general manager Cecil Kimber. However, his daughter said he insisted until the day he died that MG did not stand for Morris Garage. History believed otherwise.

Meh. It's her versus the world. It was Morris's company. Kimber was an employee. Said another way, follow the money.

The common belief is that the name "M.G." stands for "Morris Garages". Whether or not this is true has been the subject of much debate over the years. Thanks Dave, but it sounds like a distinction without much of a difference. The letters come from Morris Garage but they are not meant to be an abbreviation of Morris Garage. Fine by me. It's an excellent example of automotive branding. Given the ownership all rolled up to William Morris, M.G. was essentially a division of Morris Garage and yes, a separate entity. But the letters still come from the name of the parent. In other words, there is no mystery surrounding where the letters M.G. came from.
