What is your assessment? Do you think it does better than simple French Press? Is there taste difference between the French Press and the Santos Vacuum set up?

If the taste difference is minimal, I'll take your word for it and not get it. I am all about being practical. French Press is not that complicated so I think I can manage it but that Santos seems really complicated. Unless the taste is out of this world, it may not be worth the trouble.

i don't think there's a noticable difference between a FP and the santos

i will say the coffee folks on a website i belonged to thought it was better hence the reason i bought it when i was into the coffee hobby

again i only use this on special occasions now because it really does look cool when you make a pot and it's not complicated at all -

fill the bottom with water put the top on with fine grounds and put it on your stove - once all the water has evaporated to the top pot remove from the stove and wait - a few minutes and you'll have fresh coffee on the bottom and grounds in the top pot

i guess my true testament would be if it broke would i buy a new one? and the answer is nope - i really like my grind and brew

^ I appreciate your comments. I will hold off on buying one unless I see one at the thrift store.

When I take my long trip, I will take my FP.

My wife and I grind our beans and use a French press. As far as I'm concerned, there is no other way to make coffee.

We drink coffee that comes in a blue square plastic container. I can't even tell you what brand. +1 makes it in the morning and it's ready when I am. Plus the containers are the best part - great for storing car parts, etc. I never would have guessed so many were into fo-fo coffee but I should have known after the microbrew discussions. I do understand, heck, I use to drink coffee made in Paris; doesn't get any more French than that. My wife does not like strong coffee, so she's beat me down over the years.

My wife can't stand her coffee strong either, so we make 2 pots. One has my coffee and the other has her dishwater

Dave, at least we didn't get into lattes and other so-called coffee beverages. I feel like less than a man just for adding cream to my coffee.

I can't speak for other coffee nerds here but as I've gotten older the flavor and especially the aroma is worth the extra trouble of getting fresh beans, grinding the coffee in the morning, and so on. But I am the only one in the house who drinks coffee and I only drink it on weekends. During the week I just wait until I get to work and drink the stuff we make here. (It makes my weekend coffee taste even better by comparison!)

I am not a coffee "snob," however, I splurge on my coffee, getting whole-beans delivered on my schedule from Peets. This is absolutely the best coffee we have ever tried. Whenever we run out, my +1 complains until the next shipment, and I have to agree...it is the best (IMHO...of course, YMMV)

^^ I've never enjoyed Peets though I've heard only good things about it. I may give it a try sometime.
