My WRX factory tires were toast a few months ago and the car was getting squirrelly in the rain. The center tread was still there but the outside edges were pretty smooth as you noted Rob, just the way those tires wear.
I replaced them with Cooper Zeon, and I was really surprised that they feel better than my OEM tires in every way. The factory tires are no slouches either. I couldn't believe the difference in response and handling, and my car is super quiet on the highway. I never realized how noisy the factory tires were, but the new tires are so much quieter. I also like a higher treadwear tire, I was willing to give up some handling to get better treadwear, but the Zeons feel even better to me, I think the sidewall is stiffer as the response is much improved. Despite the higher treadwear the new tires seem to handle better.

I had a friend who has since moved out of state but he was a true tire expert. His job was to visit and inspect tire manufacturers all over the world. This was his advice from perhaps 15 years ago.
* Stay with top name brands (Michelin, Goodyear, Pirelli, Dunlop, etc.).
* Avoid tires from Cooper and any tire made in China.

One of my friends runs a set of Coopers on his MG with no issues. But MGs are not known for their top end speed.

Cooper has four manufacturing plants in the USA , and it does make tires China too. It was a great American brand that started in the Akron area and still is based in Ohio, with plants in few different states. I believe the Zeon is still made in USA.
