Purchased new in 1983. This was a milestone car for Japan as well as Honda. In 1982 the Accord was the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be built in the USA. It was built in Marysville, Ohio and became the best-selling Japanese car for the next fifteen years (1982-1997).

In January 1983 when listed in the magazine’s 10 Best Cars list Car & Driver magazine wrote “The Honda Accord has consistently proved itself the best of the econoboxes in test after test. We love it, and, by now, every car manufacturer in the world has torn down an Accord, scratched his corporate head, and marveled at how they do it. The Accord is the definition of fit and finish. When an Accord sits beside a Mercedes 38OSEL, it’s extremely difficult to find the extra $37,000 worth of transportation value in the Mercedes, and we’re confident that any number of senior Daimler-Benz engineers would agree with that statement. Hondas, however, are not clones of European cars; they are superior little American cars.

When purchased in 1983 my oldest daughter was 14. It was going strong with 100,000 miles when it was given to her in 1990 when she was 21 years old. Through neglect and minor wrecks, she eventually trashed the car.

We seem to be having critter issues at the new house. Neighbor was walking his dog and heard squeaky noises from under one of the cars and he knocked on the door to let us know (super super nice of him). Went out to take a peek, popped the hood on the Volvo, and nothing, and right as I was closing the hood I heard the squeaky noises from the Land Rover. Walked over to it and banged on the hood first, heard scurrying noises and pissy squirrel sounds and popped the hood. Sure enough, very few bits of nuts but when I removed the engine cover seems they've been chewing on the foam insulation on the underside of the cover. Neighbor stopped back by while we were outside and he said it's quite the issue where we are, we asked what we should try to do to help and he suggested moth balls or dryer sheets. We don't have any mothballs but dryer sheets a plenty, so I placed them in spots under the hood of both cars in areas away from direct heat.

Curious if any of you have other suggestions or if the dryer sheets will put them off.

Squirrel’s teeth never stop growing so they are always chewing on things. It’s usually wires around a house (they got my internet cable once) or wires in cars.

My first thought was to provide an alternative – another food & chewing source. We have lots of squirrels and they never bother my truck which sits outside 9 months of the year. They are always at our bird feeders eating seeds off the ground.

Mice are always an issue with MGs since it's near impossible to keep them from the interiors. It is claimed several dishes, filled with mothballs, in the footwells, on the battery compartment, in the boot and in the bonnet will repel most mice. Use the “Old Fashioned” mothballs – naphthalene. When it comes to mice I never believed dryer sheets work and they don't mention it in the article I posted.

Dave, thanks for that. We had feeders around the old house, probably why it wasn't an issue. I'll definitely pick some up as it makes a lot of sense.
