Those Toyota trucks take a licking and keep on ticking. And they are readily available. And Toyota, unlike Honda, does fleet sales.

The discontinued car show "Top Gear" once did a piece on the Tacoma/Helux. They literally drove it into a lake and found it still ran. They put a brick on the accelerator and ran the thing at full blast and it just did not stop.

My Tacoma has been great and it was built at the now closed Numi plant in Fremont (Bay Area) in California.

Tacoma and the Hilux aren't the same trucks, chassis is different along with the engine(s). TopGear put that Hilux through hell and back, and yes it kept ticking on. Btw, it was the sea the put it in, not a lake. Tied it down on a wharf and it came undone, they had to get a tractor thing to get it out. They also dropped it off a 20 story building that was imploded. Darn impressive.

The Hilux was the top-selling ute in NZ for 23 (27?) years, before the Ford Ranger finally overtook it about 9 years ago, so they're everywhere. Hiluxes, Rangers, Nissan Navaras, VW Amaroks and so on are what's considered our equivalent of F150s/Silverados/Rams because they fit better on our roads better and obviously are built in RHD. The US trucks are starting to creep in more and more, especially the Ram now it's being sold new already converted to RHD in Australia, but prices start at $US60,000 (on special!) for the poverty-spec 4x4 model.

Due to their reputation for reliability the Hilux holds it value very well, with 10 year old models still asking about 70% of their original price regardless of mileage.

Funnily enough I found a single cab 4x4 Hilux tipper for sale online yesterday. That could be handy.

Being in a tends-to-be-rural area we have several onramps onto Rt2 that terminate with stops signs.
So with a very short on-ramp we get to test 0-70 speeds frequently since those 2 lanes aren't waiting for you.
You have to see your gap and take it.
I often think of this when I think about getting older cars to add to the collection.
an older Volkswagen or a AH sprite would simply be suicide. 0-60 times were measured in minutes or N/A.
0-70 in a sprite was 31 seconds, more than half a minute. that's a long time. a really long time.

Which is why we opted for the 6 cylinder in my previous Jeep. Would have liked the same engine in my 2021 but it was not available. We took the 4 cylinder with a turbo. I guess we like buying premium gas.

Jerry the purpose of a sports car is to have fun and that means avoiding freeways - even on long trips unless you have no other options. Thankfully most freeways in MI do not have wall-to-wall cars on them. I experienced some of that in Memphis last summer; no fun. Some time period engine mods help, such a boring it out, performance cam, etc. Still performance is not something we think about, even after improving it by probably 20%.

My 2017 NSX was delivered to Loveland, CO from Long Island, NY three years ago today (2-12-2021). I 've put 8,385 miles, or about 2,800 miles per year on it in three years, all in Colorado. Today is a great day to take it out since it's sunny and about 50*F but I plan to ride my ElliptiGO and get a slow leak on a Pilot tire fixed, instead. Tomorrow we'll play.

^2-12-2021. I was very relieved when I got it up my icy driveway.

^This is the dial to change the drive mode. Silly buttons and levers to change from reverse to drive to park.
