Back in 2016 I tapped a curb as my Civic slid on black ice in my neighbourhood, not even driving fast. It was enough to bend the electric steering rack internally. A Honda mechanic at my dealership told me it doesn't take much to bend them as they are made a bit on the weak side. We ended up replacing the rack - not cheap - as it was not turning smoothly at all.

it's hard to say it but about 30 years ago 
, my wife looped around our Mazda MPV and hit a curb broadside.
She wasn't going very fast but still took out most of the suspension links but no body damage. I think it was a little over 3 grand to replace them.

I have 115,000 miles on it now and the only thing that failed was the upstream O2 sensor. Thank you Rock Auto. It has never failed to start or run.

As an aside, have you ever noticed that 90%, or more of terrorists' pickups or SUVs are Toyotas? Really weird.

These type of things go in cycles.
One push will be for better performance, the next to make it lighter, the next to make it cheaper, the next to make it more reliable, the next make it safer, and then back to performance.
it's like getting 433rd pressing of olive oil. they always want a little more.
Find a new material, a new process, a new lubricant.
Go and compare the steering rack of a 'heavy-duty' truck of today with a late 50's car.
Which do you think is heavier? but which feels better?
Look at the stupid amounts of horsepower they are getting out of engines now.

that's probably because toyota has worldwide distribution, there are plenty around and they're not American.
