Same engine used in the Hyundai, as far as I know. Some engines just self-destruct, others catch on fire, they have had two big engine issues.

The reporters in Detroit drive the cars for 24 or 48 hours, maybe a week. They marvel at the technology and the cool sporty accents, nice seats, and don't forget that cool N grin shift button. None of it is any good if your engine self-destructs after you plunk down your hard earned money. People I know who have gone through the engine or tranny issues would rather have bought a different car even if it was covered by warranty.

I agree with that up to a point, since they are being asked to judge for best car of the year, etc. But they don't normally stick their heads in the sand on what cars are poorly built and the ones I listen to speak their minds.

I had a new engine put in my 04 S2000 when I missed shifted from 3rd to second gear at a high rpm in a group that was driving back roads at a spirited pace. I fried the engine and missed a Spring Fling. Total f- -k up on my part and I paid for it.

Well they wouldn't have to look hard for the information if they were really intent on talking about reliability issues as part of their testing. The problem was so bad the manufacturers issued a warning for customers not to park their vehicles indoors. There was the fire risk, then the self-destructing engines, then the transmissions.

Well Dave, I'll go against the grain and offer a few 'others' to at least look at.
Out of the gate, An Ariel Atom. basically the 4 wheel version of a motorcycle.
Obviously it does have a few limitations.

Obviously I could be accused of being a fan boy but with that aside take a look at an AMG GT.
a couple options. from the simple GT coupe to the GT-R and it's silly $$ derivatives.
true you don't get to row the gears although in manual or race mode you do get to paddle through them with the DCT.
There are a surprising number of S2000 comparisons.
It's an S2000 with torque as in the GT-S has more torque at idle than the S2000 at peak.
It's 2x the cylinders and 2x the displacement plus turbos thrown in for good measure.
It's half the time to 60 of the S2000. The loud pedal is . The S2000 0-60 time and the GT-S 0-90 time are about the same.
Passing is the most notable difference, 60 to 100 is about 3 seconds.
Purely my opinion but the chassis is tighter and more responsive than the S2000. As in it can drive circles around it.
It is at another level of handling, where the S2000 does 0.90 G's lateral, the GT-S does 1.09G's.
Braking is also sensational, yes even compared to the S2000. The ceramic rotors are a little grabby when cold.
There are convertible versions out there, the GT-A, GT-C, GT-R roadsters.
It is a visceral experience. I won't say you have to buy one, but you owe it too yourself to drive one.
Obviously not the ideal season to be doing it.

I would love to drive one on a track, maybe around my neighbourhood, what do most people think about safety on a highway or open road ? I don't trust other drivers when it comes to small, low, and fast cars, getting cut off is my biggest fear in a car like that, outside of a head on accident.

Those surveys are only as good as the people they send the surveys to. I’ve owned a lot of cars and never once received a JD Power survey.

Also, issues not related to the reliability of a car is reported as a problem or defect on those surveys. Not understanding a button on the dash is listed as a problem with the car, not the inept owner.

A what I call Robb thought went through my brain today more of a question actually. My car was built in December of 2017 which makes it 6 years and one month old so one would say that the battery is 6 years and one month old but my thought was when was the battery made and how long had it been sitting somewhere? Never really thought about it before but we assume with a new car everything is brand new but how old are the parts that get put on a new car?
